Floral plantings are promoted to foster ecological intensification of agriculture through provisioning of ecosystem services. However, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of different floral plantings, their characteristics and consequences for crop yield is lacking. Here we quantified the impacts of flower strips and hedgerows on pest control (18 studies) and pollination services (17 studies) in adjacent crops in North America, Europe and New Zealand. Flower strips, but not hedgerows, enhanced pest control services in adjacent fields by 16% on average. However, effects on crop pollination and yield were more variable. Our synthesis identifies several important drivers of variability in effectiveness of plantings: pollination services declined exponentially with distance from plantings, and perennial and older flower strips with higher flowering plant diversity enhanced pollination more effectively. These findings provide promising pathways to optimise floral plantings to more effectively contribute to ecosystem service delivery and ecological intensification of agriculture in the future.  相似文献

Deforestation is a global process that has strongly affected the Atlantic Forest in South America, which has been recognised as a threatened biodiversity hotspot. An important proportion of deforested areas were converted to forest plantations. Araucaria angustifolia is a native tree to the Atlantic Forest, which has been largely exploited for wood production and is currently cultivated in commercial plantations. An important question is to what extent such native tree plantations can be managed to reduce biodiversity loss in a highly diverse and vulnerable forest region . We evaluated the effect of stand age, stand basal area, as a measure of stand density, and time since last logging on the density and richness of native tree regeneration in planted araucaria stands that were successively logged over 60 years, as well as the differences between successional groups in the response of plant density to stand variables. We also compared native tree species richness in planted araucaria stands to neighbouring native forest. Species richness was 71 in the planted stands (27 ha sampled) and 82 in native forest (18 ha sampled) which approximate the range of variation in species richness found in the native forests of the study area. The total abundance and species richness of native trees increased with stand age and time since last logging, but ecological groups differed in their response to such variables. Early secondary trees increased in abundance with stand age 3–8 times faster than climax or late secondary trees. Thus, the change in species composition is expected to continue for a long term. The difference in species richness between native forest and planted stands might be mainly explained by the difference in plant density. Therefore, species richness in plantations can contribute to local native tree diversity if practices that increase native tree density are implemented.  相似文献

Although compelling data have demonstrated the effectiveness of estrogen replacement therapy for the treatment of accelerated bone loss in postmenopausal osteoporosis and ovariectomized animals, the mechanisms by which estrogens reduce bone resorption remain to be elucidated. To address this issue, in the present study we investigated whether estrogens were able to induce programmed cell death or apoptosis in osteoclast precursors. To this purpose, a preosteoclastic cell line (FLG 29.1) was cultured in the absence or presence of nanomolar concentrations of 17beta-estradiol (17betaE2). Using time-lapse videomicroscopy, it was shown that 17betaE2 induced FLG 29.1 cell apoptosis in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, a significant increase in the activity of caspase 3 enzyme and in the number of nuclei undergoing DNA fragmentation was observed in FLG 29.1 cells treated with 17betaE2 compared to untreated cells. Finally, transmission electron microscopy of the treated cells showed typical apoptotic morphology. These data indicate that 17betaE2 is able to promote in vitro apoptosis in preosteoclastic cells and suggest that estrogenic molecules may exert in vivo a direct role in negatively modulating the pool of undifferentiated bone marrow cells capable ultimately of maturing into osteoclasts.  相似文献

Isolated microtubule proteins from the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) assemble at temperatures between 8 and 30 degrees C. The cold-adaptation is an intrinsic property of the tubulin molecules, but the reason for it is unknown. To increase our knowledge of tubulin diversity and its role in cold-adaptation we have further characterized cod tubulins using alpha- and beta-tubulin site-directed antibodies and antibodies towards posttranslationally modified tubulin. In addition, one cod brain beta-tubulin isotype has been sequenced. In mammals there are five beta-tubulins (betaI, betaII, betaIII, betaIVa and betaIVb) expressed in brain. A cod betaIII-tubulin was identified by its electrophoretic mobility after reduction and carboxymethylation. The betaIII-like tubulin accounted for more than 30% of total brain beta-tubulins, the highest yield yet observed in any animal. This tubulin corresponds most probably with an additional band, designated beta(x), which was found between alpha- and beta-tubulins on SDS-polyacrylamide gels. It was found to be phosphorylated and neurospecific, and constituted about 30% of total cod beta-tubulin isoforms. The sequenced cod tubulin was identified as a betaIV-tubulin, and a betaIV-isotype was stained by a C-terminal specific antibody. The amount of staining indicates that this isotype, as in mammals, only accounts for a minor part of the total brain beta-tubulin. Based on the estimated amounts of betaIII- and betaIV-tubulins in cod brain, our results indicate that cod has at least one additional beta-tubulin isotype and that beta-tubulin diversity evolved early during fish evolution. The sequenced cod betaIV-tubulin had four unique amino acid substitutions when compared to beta-tubulin sequences from other animals, while one substitution was in common with Antarctic rockcod beta-tubulin. Residues 221, Thr to Ser, and 283, Ala to Ser, correspond in the bovine tubulin dimer structure to loops that most probably interact with other tubulin molecules within the microtubule, and might contribute to cold-adaptation of microtubules.  相似文献

Nucleotide excision repair (NER), a highly versatile DNA repair mechanism, is capable of removing various types of DNA damage including those induced by UV radiation and chemical mutagens. NER has been well characterized in yeast and mammalian systems but its presence in plants has not been reported. Here it is reported that a plant gene isolated from male germline cells of lily (Lilium longiflorum) shows a striking amino acid sequence similarity to the DNA excision repair proteins human ERCC1 and yeast RAD10. Homologous genes are also shown to be present in a number of taxonomically diverse plant genera tested, suggesting that this gene may have a conserved function in plants. The protein encoded by this gene is able to correct significantly the sensitivity to the cross-linking agent mitomycin C in ERCC1-deficient Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. These findings suggest that the NER mechanism is conserved in yeast, animals and higher plants.  相似文献

Caste-specific differentiation of the honey bee ovary commences in the last larval instar. In this process, formation of germ cell clusters by synchronous and incomplete mitoses occurs in the queen ovary, whereas in the worker ovary programmed cell death is the dominant feature. BrdU and TUNEL labeling were used to study dynamics of cell proliferation and apoptosis-dependent DNA degradation in ovaries of naturally developing queens and workers, as well as in juvenile hormone-treated worker larvae. Cell proliferation in ovaries of last-instar queen larvae generally exceeded that in workers, except for the late feeding phase. This inversion in cell proliferation patterns coincided with the onset of apoptosis in worker ovaries, as evidenced by TUNEL labeling. Juvenile hormone application to early-fifth-instar worker larvae had two noticeable effects. First, it diminished the number of S-phase nuclei in ovaries of late feeding-phase workers, bringing them to queen-like levels. Second, it prevented the induction of apoptotic DNA degradation. Caste-specific regulation of cell division in connection with programmed cell death can thus be attributed to the previously described differences in juvenile hormone titer in queen and worker larvae, adding a new facet to this hormone's multiple functions.  相似文献

Summary Cultures of embryonicDrosophila melanogaster cells were examined by electron microscopy and events in myogenesis were recorded. Thick and thin myofilaments, T-tubules and sarcoplasmic reticulum all appeared at about the same time, 10.5 hr. This was about 5 hr after the final division of myoblasts and about the time that muscle cells were elongating, aligning and fusing. Sarcoplasm typical of insect muscle was detected by 18.5 hr, as were myotendonal and tendocuticular junctions. Two populations of myocytes were detected, the cytoplasm of one more electron-dense than the other. The only previous report of myofibrilogenesis in invertebrate embryos had described novel mechanisms. InDrosophila embryonic material, however, the sequence of myofibrilogenesis resembled that in post-embryonic insect or vertebrate material.
